Pregnant Horse In N. Bay Draws Web Following
PETALUMA (BCN) ―
The imminent birth of a foal in a Petaluma stall is a drawing worldwide following on the Internet.
Thousands of people are following the pregnancy of Suerte, a 21-year-old chestnut trakehner, and calling or e-mailing their support and concerns.
The intense interest began after horse breeder Genevieve Ghilotti installed cameras to upload live video stream from the stalls at Glenhill Farm in west Petaluma to allow her clients to keep an eye on expectant mares and witness the births of their babies.
Ghilotti said she has received calls around the clock from Germany, England, Canada and Africa and nearly every state in America.
That even includes Africam, a camera set up at a watering hole in Africa where news of Suerte is posted on a bulletin board, Ghilotti said.
The typical gestation is 340 days and Suerte is technically two weeks overdue but a range of 320-370 days is still considered normal. A veterinarian is monitoring the famous mother daily.
There have been false alarms.
"Almost every night, when she lays down flat, her legs move about almost as if she's galloping in her sleep and people think it's labor," Ghilotti said in a news release about the phenomenon.
The premature reports about the successful birth have created the term "Suerte'd", meaning Suerte duped her followers and fans into thinking she was in labor. Ghilotti even made up "I've Been Suerte'd" T-shirts.
Ghilotti said she is expecting six foals this year at Glenhill Farm where she breeds warmbloods for the hunter ring.
