Boston police have charged a medical student with the death of a woman advertising massage services on Craiglist, CBS station WBZ-TV reported.
Philip Markoff, 22, has been charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, armed robbery and kidnapping, Boston police Commissioner Ed Davis said. Police say Markoff is a second-year medical student at Boston University. They did not release a possible motive for the alleged attacks.
Markoff is a suspect in the murder of Julissa Brisman, 26, who was found shot to death at the Marriott Copley Hotel in Boston Tuesday night. Police believe he may also be involved in two attempted robberies at luxury hotels in downtown Boston, and one at a Holiday Inn in Rhode Island.
A Rhode Island woman said she was attacked outside The Cadillac Lounge strip club in Providence, R.I. The 26-year-old woman also advertised services on Craigslist.
"He's someone who is clearly preying on people in a very vulnerable position, someone who is committing a very, very serious crime," Davis said. "We are happy to have this man off the street in such a timely way."
A woman held at gunpoint at the Holiday Inn told police she believed the crime was similar to Brisman's murder case, which prompted a review of surveillance tapes from the hotels. Police noticed that the same man -- weighing approximately 200 pounds with blond hair -- appeared on both tapes.
The release of surveillance video prompted more than 150 tips that lead police to Markoff, Davis said.
Markoff is from New York and offered neighbors no hint of a double life. An acquaintance who attended undergraduate school with him at SUNY Albany described him as a "naturally bright" student who didn't have to study to get into medical school.
Markoff was expelled from BU Monday night. He is expected to be arraigned Tuesday.
