Giants Coaches Contacted In Steroids Probe

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ― Members of the San Francisco Giants' coaching staff have been contacted by former Senator George Mitchell in his steroids investigation.

Several people within Major League Baseball have confirmed to The Associated Press that coaches on the Giants staff heard from Mitchell. They spoke on condition of anonymity because teams have been asked not to discuss the investigation.

The former Senate majority leader was appointed in March by commissioner Bud Selig to head an independent probe into steroids in the sport.

Selig says he was prompted to launch an investigation in part by the book "Game of Shadows," by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters who detailed Barry Bonds' alleged use of steroids, insulin and human growth hormone.

The slugger has always denied using any performance-enhancing drugs.
