British PM: U.K. Will Halve Troops In Iraq By 2008

CBS News Interactive: Battle For Iraq

LONDON (CBS) ― Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Monday that Britain will cut its troop levels in Iraq to 2,500 in early 2008, trimming the force by nearly half.

Brown told Parliament he planned "from next spring, to reduce force numbers in southern Iraq to a figure of 2,500." Decision about further cuts will be made once that reduction is complete, he said.

According to eariler reports, Iraq is expected to take over security of the southern Basra province, where the majority of British troops have been located.

U.S. and Iraqi authorities have previously aired concerns that a British drawdown could jeopardize the region's rich oil resources and the land supply routes from Kuwait to Baghdad.

But Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said last week his forces "are prepared to take over security of Basra within two months and we will."
