Cupertino Company To Research Ethanol In Montana
BUTTE, Mont. (AP) ―
A California company is announcing the opening of what it calls the first U.S. factory designed to make ethanol from both cellulose and starch instead of corn.
Representatives of Cupertino, Calif.-based AE Biofuels Inc. will join government officials Monday to open the 9,000-square-foot demonstration plant in Butte, Mont.
Typically, ethanol is made from corn.
This has caused corn-based food products to increase in price.
The Butte plant is set to test several types of nonfood products like wheat straw or grasses as potential ethanol materials.
The company will also test agricultural waste like corn stalks and sugar cane stalks as possible sources of the gasoline alternative.
