Divers Search SoBay Reservoirs For Alien Mussels

 Environment & The Green Beat

SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― California Fish and Game divers Friday searched several Santa Clara Valley Water District reservoirs, looking zebra mussels, an invasive shellfish that can clog water pumps and pipes.

They also looked for two other invasive and destructive species, the Quagga mussel and New Zealand mud snail.

Last month, zebra mussels were discovered in the San Justo Reservoir in San Benito County, the first such confirmation in California waters. Zebra mussels are closely related to the Quagga mussels which were discovered in Southern California waters last month.

Boats pose the greatest risk of transporting the invasive species, said Bruce Cabral, water quality manager with the Santa Clara Valley Water District.
