A strong storm expected Friday and Saturday could drop more than a foot of snow at the highest elevations of the Sierra.

The National Weather Service says snow levels will start at about 5,000 to 6,000 feet of elevation Friday morning, dropping to around 3,000 feet by Friday night.

This will be a colder system than the one that passed through in early October. And although it will be a snow producer, moisture levels for the foothills and Sacramento Valley will be mild to moderate.

The valley could see about a quarter-inch of rain, with Auburn getting as much as a half-inch to an inch.

A second, much weaker system Saturday will bring a little more rain and wind to the area and snow to the mountains. But by Sunday, a drying trend will clear skies.
