Scientists Turn SF Wastewater Into Fertilizer

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― Waste water is being repurposed in the Bay Area to help the environment. Scientists from a Canadian company have found a way to make phosphorous, a byproduct of human waste, and transform it into fertilizer.

Waste water treatment experts from all over the west came to San Francisco's sewage treatment plant on Wednesday to check out the new technology. An extractor takes part of the wastewater and spits out tiny crystals of magnesium ammonium sulfate, which looks like the fertilizer put on lawns.
