Water service was restored Sunday afternoon to residents and businesses on a major road in San Francisco after a water main break early Sunday morning, according to the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission. However, Monday commute traffic was snarled because of the lengthy repairs.
The break was reported around 3:30 a.m. on the east side of Van Ness Avenue between Vallejo Street and Pacific Avenue, commission spokeswoman Christina Kerby said earlier Sunday.
Three apartment buildings and a business were without water at about 8:20 a.m., but all water service was restored by 1 p.m., according to the commission.
There were no reported injuries or damage to vehicles due to the main break. However, the rupture caused the pavement on Van Ness Avenue to bulge and crack due to water pressure below the surface of the roadway.
As a result, two out of three northbound lanes of Van Ness Avenue between Vallejo Street and Pacific Avenue were closed through the Monday morning commute while crews repaired the damaged section of the pavement.
The 8-inch water main was ruptured due to the age of the pipeline, according to the commission. Many lines in the area are nearly 100 years old.
San Francisco firefighters and police also assisted. Police and traffic control were to remain on site while the repair work is finished.
All three lanes of northbound Van Ness Avenue were set to reopen shortly before 8 a.m. Monday.
