Police were investigating a drive-by shooting outside a Vallejo home Wednesday evening that left four people seriously injured, including a 2-year old boy.
It happened in the 1500 block of Lorenzo Street near Elliot just before 5 p.m. The shooting scene is in a residential area in North Vallejo that is just across the street from Dan Mini Elementary School, where 90 students were in an after school program at the time of the shooting.
The Vallejo school district sent counselors to the school Thursday to assist children and staff in need of additional emotional support, and police also had extra patrols in the area.
Vallejo Police Lt. Eric Mortenson told CBS 5 that a man on a "ninja-style" black Kawasaki motorcycle, with a blue stripe on the gas tank, drove up to the house and fired into a group of young men standing in front of the house.
It was not clear whether the gunman knew there was a toddler in the group, but police indicated that the boy was shot three times in the torso.
"It appears to be targeted," said Lt. Mortenson, although he said witnesses were still being interviewed.
Police said the motorcyclist was a black man in his late-20s to early-30s, with a dark complexion and a thin build. He was wearing a dark leather motorcycle jacket possibly black or dark blue or purple and a full-face helmet.
The gunman used a .44 caliber handgun to shoot into the group of men, police said.
More than two dozen police evidence markers were sporadically placed on a sidewalk in front of the house and throughout the street.
Mortenson said the toddler was airlifted to Oakland Children's Hospital for treatment and was not doing well. The boy was believed to be in critical condition on Thursday morning.
The three young men - identified by police as Bruce R. Williams, Lamar A. Williams, and Eric H. Hamilton - were transported to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek in serious condition.
Anyone with information about the shooting was urged by police to call Detective Sgt. Bartlett at (707) 651-7145.
