Vallejo Murder Suspect Extradited From Mexico
VALLEJO (BCN) ―
A fugitive has been extradited from Mexico and will be tried for fatally shooting a passenger in a vehicle in August 2007, Vallejo police have announced.
Israel Rivera-Balderas, 22, is charged with the murder of 19-year-old Jose Romo of Vallejo. Romo was sitting in the right front passenger seat of a vehicle containing three other occupants when he was shot in the head by someone in a vehicle that passed by their car near Carolina and Marin streets on Aug. 12, 2007.
Police found Romo in the parking lot of Nujos restaurant at 1201 Georgia St. He was treated by paramedics at the scene and taken to a hospital but died the next day.
Police arrested the driver of the suspect's vehicle, 24-year-old Jenny Dizon of Vallejo, for murder.
Police identified Rivera-Balderas as the gunman, but he allegedly fled to Chicago and then to Mexico where he is a citizen, Detective Matt Mustard said.
Police worked with the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington D.C., the U.S. Department of Internal Affairs and the U.S. Marshall's Service to obtain an arrest warrant for Rivera-Balderas.
The U.S. Marshall's Service and law enforcement officials in Mexico arrested Rivera-Balderas at his father's residence near Tijuana on Feb. 9.
After exhausting all his legal challenges, Rivera-Balderas was extradited to the United States on Dec. 2. He also faces charges of attempted murder of the three other occupants in the vehicle and of being a member of a criminal street gang.
Rivera-Balderas and Dizon will appear in Solano County Superior Court Jan. 30 for setting of a preliminary hearing. Both are being held in the Solano County jail.
