Critics Claim Vallejo's City Budget Fix Won't Work
VALLEJO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
Several angry protesters shouted their disapproval at the Mayor of Vallejo Saturday afternoon as he talked on the steps of city hall about a plan he hopes will keep the city out of bankruptcy.
The proposed budget stopgap would, among other things, require police and firefighters to give up a 6.5 percent pay raise. But critics of the proposal said the public safety unions are giving up very little in the process.
"How is it possible for us to raise $15 million by the end of this year, and equal amounts for the next several years within the existing monies that we have within a declining economy?" asked one man in the crowd.
Mayor Osby Davis told him that they would not be able to raise $15 million, but the city is forced to make cuts.
The proposal will go before the city council on Monday.
Vallejo faces a $6 million deficit that could balloon to $14 million next year.
