Underground Explosion Shakes SF Financial District

SAN FRANCISCO (BCN) ― A small group of Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers without power since an apparent underground vault explosion in San Francisco Tuesday afternoon are expected to regain power at about 8 a.m. Wednesday, a PG&E spokeswoman said.

A fire dispatcher said the incident occurred around 4 p.m. at Drumm and California streets but PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian could not confirm that the incident was in fact a vault explosion.

The incident was caused by a cable failure, PG&E officials said.

Sarkissian said PG&E is working to determine what caused the cable failure and added that 11 customers were left without power Tuesday while the company pinpointed and fixed the problem.

PG&E initially expected the customers to have power restored around 6 a.m. Wednesday, but spokeswoman Brandi Ehlers said Wednesday morning that restoration was expected around 8 a.m.

The incident also disrupted San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency cable car service on the California line and service on the 1-California and 41-Union lines, but Muni reported regular service Wednesday morning.
