A boxer mix with a wicked underbite won Friday's annual Ugliest Dog Contest. The world-famous staple of the Sonoma-Marin Fair for 21 years was held at the Petaluma Fairgrounds, as part of the Sonoma-Marin Fair.
The winner, Pabst, was a first time entry and was the first mutt in seven years to win the contest. The Chinese Crested breed has dominated recent contests and represented more than half of this year's field, according to contest organizers.
Organizers said Pabst was a rescue dog adopted by his owner, Miles Egstad from Citrus Heights, three years ago.
Only four of this year's 15 contestants competed last year and the new breeds are largely local dogs. Fair officials said the poor economy seems to have taken a toll on entries from beyond California.
Local contestants included Pabst; Mojo, a Shar Pei from Pleasanton; Winston, a shepherd mix from Santa Rosa; and Kaiya, a Chinese Pug also from Santa Rosa.
Princess Chelsea from Fairfield, and Reggie and Veronica from Phoenix, Ariz., also returned to compete.
The only returning champion is Rascal, still ugly after all these years. The 7-pound purebred Chinese Crested from Sunnyvale won the title in 2002.
Pabst and his owner received $1,600 for sweeping all three rounds and a trophy from the Fair. House of Dog, a manufacturer of sophisticated dog accessories also awarded a year-long modeling contract and another $1,000.
Animal Planet also filmed the show and is also offering a prize. The winner will have a professional photo shoot by photographer Grace Chon of Shine Pet Photos the next day at the Sheraton Petaluma.
The Fair runs June 24-28.
