Cal Sports Center Opponents Appeal Judge's Ruling

BERKELEY (BCN) ― Opponents of a planned University of California, Berkeley sports center that has spurred a year-and-a-half tree-sitting protest are appealing a judge's decision to allow construction to begin.

A neighborhood association and an environmental foundation on Thursday called on the state court of appeal to issue an injunction halting the project.

The groups argue the proposed sports center would be too close to a major fault line and require the felling of dozens of oak trees.

Panoramic Hill Association founder Michael Kelly says he expects a decision within the next week-and-a-half.

University officials have agreed not to start construction until the appeals court rules. An Alameda County Superior Court judge earlier this week ruled the project could go forward.
