Fallen Tree Fractures N. Bay Girl's Leg At School
SANTA ROSA (BCN) ―
A 5-year-old girl suffered a fractured right leg when a pine tree fell on her in a sandbox at the Brush Creek Montessori School in east Santa Rosa Thursday afternoon, a Santa Rosa Fire Department battalion chief said.
Battalion Chief Andy Pforsich said the tree apparently was on property next to the school when it fell into the sandbox around 1:20 p.m. The tree was about 60 feet tall and 2.5 feet wide at the base. The girl was likely struck by a limb, Pforsich said.
One other student in the sandbox suffered a minor scratch, he said.
An emergency helicopter landed in a park near the Rincon Valley Library and flew the girl to Children's Hospital in Oakland, Pforsich said.
There were around 11 children in the sandbox, Pforsich said. School staff had removed them from the play area before the fire department arrived.
It was windy in the area around the time the tree fell this afternoon, Pforsich said.
Children ages 3-12 attend the east Santa Rosa school. School officials did not return calls for comment this afternoon.
