Ex-Congressman Campbell Eyes CA Gubernatorial Run

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ― Former State Senator and Congressman Tom Campbell has become the first Republican to file paperwork toward a possible run for governor in 2010.

Campbell served in U.S. Congress as a representative of California's 12th and 15th districts.

The 55-year-old Campbell lost to Dianne Feinstein in the U.S. Senate race in 2000, and later served as state finance director.

He has a doctorate in economics from the University of Chicago, a law degree from Harvard, and recently stepped down as dean of the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

Other Republicans who are believed to have an interest in succeeding Governor Schwarznegger include state insurance commissioner Steve Poizner and ex-eBay chief executive Meg Whitman. The only potential Democratic candidate who has filed paperwork so far is San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom.
