Dozens Face June Pink Slips At Berkeley Schools

BERKELEY (CBS) ― About 50 teachers and other employees in the Berkeley school system could be out of job by the end of June as school officials try to balance the budget.

The Berkeley Unified School District Board of Education is scheduled to meet Wednesday night to finalize a list of who will receive layoff notices.

About 30 teachers are expected to be let go, as well as about 20 college advisers and counselors.

Employees with the least seniority will be notified their last day could be June 30.

School officials say they need to cut between $3.7 million and $4.5 million to try to close a projected budget shortfall.

The head of the union that represents the teachers says the union will urge school officials to find other ways balance the budget.
