A car burglary suspect plunged 200 feet to his death early Thursday after he jumped over a wall on San Francisco's Telegraph Hill while trying to flee from police, authorities said.
Police received a report about 12:30 a.m. that someone was breaking into cars on a city block near Coit Tower.
Responding officers attempted to arrest 38-year-old James Cockrum of Daly City after they saw him getting out of a a four-door Audi car on Alta Street.
But the suspect ran east on Alta and jumped over a wall that stands atop a hill to the west of Sansome Street apparently without realizing there was a steep drop, said Sgt. Neville Gittens.
Cockrum was pronounced dead at the scene after he fell about 200 feet.
Cockrum was a suspect in two car burglaries; officers said they had also discovered a Subaru station wagon that was broken into on Alta Street.
