Since San Francisco's central freeway was torn down, it has been illegal to turn right from Market Street onto Octavia, but some drivers are doing it anyway.
San Francisco Supervisor Bevan Dufty said that while razing the Central Freeway over Hayes Valley has been positive, touching down the freeway at Market was problematic, because Market is the primary bicycle thoroughfare to downtown.
There have been at least 13 serious car-versus-bike or pedestrian accidents in the past two years, when cars turned directly into pedestrian and bike right-of-ways on Market.
Now Dufty, whose district includes Hayes Valley, has proposed camera surveillance of the intersection, which would act as a deterrent.
Dufty said he asked Assemblywoman Fiona Ma to support his idea, which he says will build on the success of red light cameras. Dufty says he thinks that the number of illegal right turns has been ratcheted down, but this bill would stop them altogether.
A rally in support of Assembly Bill 23 was held Sunday, at Octavia and Market, with Dufty and Ma in attendance.
