Streets that have been shut down since the 1970's finally opened Tuesday in downtown Sunnyvale as part of a major redevelopment project. But all is not going according to plan in the commercial district.
Workers put the finishing touches on a new target store, and spruced up the sidewalks around the existing Macy's location Thursday. It's part of a plan to bring one downtown area back to life. But there were no crowds to be seen in the area, and several buildings remained unfinished.
The Sunnyvale Town Center Mall, built on top to the old downtown in the 1970's, is now ancient history, after closing down for years. Now, even the new plans to revitalize the space have hit hard times.
The combination retail, residential and office space development is halfway built, with a portion of it frozen in time when the 2007 real estate downturn hit, forcing the developer into bankruptcy.
For now, Sunnyvale merchants hope a slow rebuilding process will eventually reestablish the shopping area.
