Major Sunnyvale Overpass Reopens After Truck Crash
SUNNYVALE (BCN) ―
The Mathilda Avenue overpass, which crosses U.S. Highway 101 in Sunnyvale and serves as a major artery for the city's traffic, reopened Wednesday evening following a Tuesday morning crash, California Department of Transportation spokesman Bernard Walik said.
The overpass reopened shortly before 7 p.m. after it shut down to both northbound and southbound traffic around 8:20 a.m. Tuesday when a truck hit a portion of the bridge, damaging several girders.
The crash also caused the closure of the on-ramp from northbound Mathilda Avenue to northbound Highway 101 and the ramp from northbound Highway 101 to southbound Mathilda Avenue.
Engineers on Wednesday continued to inspect damage caused by the crash to the underside of the bridge, Walik said.
"The bridge is safe for all traffic," he said. "Our engineers determined whatever damage occurred, it wasn't significant structurally."
However, Walik said "permit load vehicles," certain vehicles of excessive size and weight, will not be allowed on the bridge until future repairs are made.
Caltrans will likely close portions of the overpass at future dates to make repairs, Walik said.
