San Francisco Cuts Back On Street Cleaning

 Environment & The Green Beat

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / KCBS) ― Cash-strapped San Francisco is cutting back on street cleaning.

The good news is that your chances of getting a ticket for parking on the wrong side of the street on cleaning days are reduced. The bad news is that more than 20 neighborhoods will be swept less often and will look messier.

The cost-cutting move is expected to save at least $1 million a year, officials said. But that doesn't take into account how much revenue will be lost with fewer tickets being written.

Street cleaning signs are being changed around the city this week, reducing weekly street sweeping to twice monthly. The exceptions will be commercial streets and high density neighborhoods like Chinatown, North Beach and Nob Hill, said Edward Reiskin, director of the Department of Public Works.
