Stockton Tops Calif. In Dropouts, Berkeley Lowest
STOCKTON (AP) ―
Stockton leads the state in school dropout rates, another dubious distinction for a city at the center of the housing meltdown.
A study by the California Dropout Research Project of UC Santa Barbara released Thursday said that of 17 cities, Stockton was the only one with more dropouts than graduates in the 2006-07 school year.
That class of Stockton's dropouts will cost $476 million over their lifetimes in lower earnings, crime and health care costs.
Gary Dei Rossi, assistant superintendent of educational services at the San Joaquin County Office of Education, said the whole community is affected.
Berkeley had the best ratio of dropouts to graduates.
