A De Anza College baseball player who hosted a party where a high school girl claims she was gang-raped caused a traffic accident earlier that day and then fled the scene, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The CHP is seeking a felony hit-and-run charge in Santa Clara County Superior Court against Steve Rebagliati, 20, this week, Officer Steve Perea said.
Rebagliati allegedly made an unsafe turn on Interstate 280 and then drove away after his maneuver caused two other cars to collide, Perea said. Accident victims were transported to the hospital complaining of pain but suffered no serious injuries.
A witness took down the license plate number of Rebagliati's green 1998 Dodge Ram pickup after the March 3 accident and called police.
A lawyer advising Rebagliati said he doubts prosecutors could prove the ballplayer knowingly fled the scene.
"He wasn't aware of any accident," Palo Alto attorney John D. Cahners said.
Santa Clara sheriff's deputies are investigating allegations that at least 10 people watched and cheered as two De Anza baseball players sexually assaulted a high school girl at a party hosted by Rebagliati later that night. No charges have been filed or arrests made in the case.
