The next time you head out to a state park, bring extra money. Fees went up this week at all 279 parks that collect them. But, that still won't be enough to save as many as 100 parks that could close because of budget cuts, unless the private sector ponys up.
A mighty wind blew from Sacramento over the states forests, and beaches, with the a $16 million budget hit according to Department of Parks and Recreation spokesman Roy Stearns, who said the price hikes are no match for that.
"This will give us about $200,000 between now and the end of the year, and about $5 million over the next three years," said Stearns.
So they're spreading the word to businesses, cities, non-profits, and the general public asking for money.
"We're not sure what we're going to get," said Stearns. "It might be that we will take two or three or four entities and cobble together the whole amount to keep a park open."
A business that donates won't have a park named after it, but instead would likely get a plaque or tasteful banner at the park's entrance.
