Sperm Donors Find Kids Through Online Registry
(CBS 5)
On Thursday, CBS 5 told the story of a Bay Area girl who used the social networking site MySpace to track down her sperm donor dad. Tens of thousands of babies are born each year to grateful parents, thanks to egg and sperm donations. But know the children are asking questions.
Armed with the sperm donor's ID number and vague details culled from clinic records, 15-year-old Virginia used MySpace to find her donor dad Todd Whitehurst. However, another website actually casts a bigger net.
On the
Donor Sibling Registry, information is posted under the donor's ID number and sperm bank or the fertility clinic. To date, the registry has matched up nearly 6,000 people.
