1 Killed In Shooting Outside Mall In Hayward
HAYWARD (BCN) ―
Although officials are not releasing the name of a man fatally shot near a Hayward mall Thursday evening, the Alameda County coroner's bureau confirmed that the 20-year-old man was a San Francisco resident.
The shooting occurred around 4 p.m. in the area of the Southland Mall, which is located at 1 Southland Mall Drive, said Hayward police Capt. Darryl McAllister.
It was around that time that mall security called police reporting two men chasing another man through the mall parking lot, McAllister said. Police began to receive numerous calls from businesses in the mall area that a shooting had taken place.
McAllister said officers quickly arrived and found the victim suffering a single gunshot wound to the head inside of the Game Stop video game store that skirted the parking lot.
Following descriptions by witnesses who described the two men seen chasing the victim to the Game Stop sore and shooting him, officers were able to locate two suspects outside a Washington Mutual bank and detained them, said McAllister. They were booked on murder charges.
Through witness accounts, police were able to determine that the two male suspects, another male and a female had a confrontation with the victim in the mall parking lot prior to the chase, according to McAllister.
The cause of the argument had not been determined.
The other two people seen during the confrontation were not involved in the chase or the shooting but were taken into custody to be questioned, he said.
A gun that had been discarded in the area was located but McAllister said police did not yet know if it was the weapon used in the shooting.
The victim was transported to Eden Medical Center and died around 4:30 p.m., police said.
The names of the victim and the four people detained were not being released.
"We're not sure where this investigation is taking us," said McAllister, who added that no identities would be released "until we have a better handle of what has happened."
