A new commuter service that would provide ferry service between South San Francisco and Oakland is getting a financial boost from the federal government.
As part of an effort to improve ferry service nationwide, the U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $3 million to a project that will build a ferry terminal at Oyster Point Marina.
The announcement Monday comes with groundbreaking on the terminal set for Oct. 19.
An official with the San Mateo County Harbor District said the project has already secured sufficient funding, but the additional money will used to help offset unexpected costs.
The new ferry service is expected to open by early 2011, with officials predicting 900 customers a day.
