3 Wildfires Burn In Sonoma, Napa Counties
SANTA ROSA (CBS 5 / KCBS / BCN) ―
Firefighters in the North Bay were kept busy Thursday, as a number of wild-land fires scorched hillsides. The temperature in Santa Rosa topped 102 degrees, as hundreds of firefighters battled blazes in from the air and on the ground.
Two brush fires continued burning as of late afternoon in steep terrain in Sonoma County but a 1-acre fire in Pope Valley off Sage Canyon Road in Napa County was determined to be 100 percent contained, Cal Fire said.
The Geysers Road fire near Geyserville that started at 4 a.m. was 120 acres, Cal Fire spokesman John Hart said. The original 50-acre fire was contained but a 70-acre nearby spot fire was only 20 percent contained, Hart said.
The fire began 4 miles up Geysers Road near the Hawkeye Ranch. Nearly 100 firefighters were still at the scene late Thursday afternoon including 10 engines, three strike teams, two dozers, two tankers and one helicopter, Hart said. Winds, which had gusted to 40 mph, subsided to 15-20 mph, Hart said.
The Tar Fire at St. Helena and Tarwater roads north of Santa Rosa near the Napa County border began as a 2-acre fire but grew to 50 acres was 50 percent contained, Hart said. Two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion or heat cramps.
Some structures in the rural area were threatened and local fire agencies were standing by to respond to any structure fires, Cal Fire said. There were no evacuations.
There were 15 engines, four hand crews, one dozer, two air tankers, one helicopter and an air attack spotter plane on that fire, Hart said. Winds in the area were at 10 mph.
Saint Helena Road in Sonoma County and Spring Mountain Road in Napa County, which becomes Saint Helena Road in Sonoma County, were still closed, Hart said.
The Pope Valley fire off Chiles & Pope Valley Road in Napa County started around 11:45 a.m. and was fully contained at 12:30 p.m., Hart said.
