Many Sonoma County Offices Closing Over Holidays

SANTA ROSA (CBS 5 / BCN) ― Many Sonoma County government offices will be closed or their staffs reduced during a mandatory time off program between Dec. 24 and Jan. 4.

The county adopted the program to save money and help balance the 2009-2010 budget. It will save the county $4.3 million and help preserve important programs and services, county spokesman Jim Toomey said.

Nearly all employees will take five unpaid days off during the current fiscal year, most of them during the December 24-Jan. 4 county closure.

Law enforcement, water delivery transportation and some health services will continue without interruption.

The county faced a $20 million general fund budget deficit and cut 5 percent from departments across the board in March. Additional cost cutting measures, including the mandatory time off program, saved an additional 5 percent and balanced the budget, Toomey said.

Among the county offices that will remain open with reduced staffs are the clerk/recorder/assessor's office, district attorney's office, public defender's office, economic assistance and employment training, and the water agency.

In the Health Services Department, there will be reduced hours at the Mental Health Med Clinic, Public Health HIV Clinic and WIC Program, Public Health Laboratory and Health Vital Statistics.

Alcohol and other drug services, the mental health jail services, the probation department, county parks, Spud Point Marina, and transportation and public works also will remain open.
