2-Alarm Fire Damages San Jose Restaurant

SAN JOSE (BCN) ― A two-alarm fire heavily damaged a restaurant in a San Jose strip mall Wednesday morning, but firefighters managed to keep it from spreading to neighboring businesses, a fire captain said.

Reports of smoke and flames brought firefighters to the Tomato Thyme restaurant, located at 5631 Cottle Road, at 4:56 a.m., said fire Capt. Craig Schwinge. A second alarm was called about 10 minutes later.

The restaurant sustained heavy damage as fire crews cut holes in the roof to attack the blaze. Schwinge said the business will have to undergo an extensive amount of remodeling before it's able to reopen as the fire compromised the roof of the building.

The blaze was declared under control at 6:32 a.m.

"It was fortunate the fire was kept to that one occupancy in the strip mall," Schwinge said.

He also noted that Fire Station 35, which opened up about a year ago, is across the street from where the fire broke out.

No one was injured by the blaze and its cause is under investigation.
