Sierra Snowpack Growing With Recent Storms

 Current Reno Conditions & Forecast

 CBS 5 Ski Report
RENO, Nev. (AP) ― The latest in a string of storms brought more snow and chain controls Friday to the Sierra.

The Boreal resort atop Donner Summit reported 8 to 12 inches of new snow over a 24-hour period ending Friday morning, while the Heavenly resort on Lake Tahoe's south shore reported 17 to 26 inches of new snow for the week.

Heavenly's snowpack now is about 160 percent of average for the date, said resort spokesman Russ Pecoraro.

"The snow is in great shape," Pecoraro told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "It looks like over this weekend we should get another 3 to 4 feet."

Mike Pierce, spokesman for the Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe resort above Reno, said strong weekend crowds are expected unless the new storms keep skiers and snowboarders home.

"Conditions couldn't be better ... We have some of the best mid-winter conditions we can have," Pierce said.

Chains were mandatory Friday afternoon on two major trans-Sierra: Interstate 80 over Donner Summit and Highway 88 over Carson Pass.

No major weather-related traffic problems were reported.

The National Weather Service was calling for a chance of snow
around Lake Tahoe every day through at least Thursday.
