After video surfaced Thursday of a great white shark off the Seacliff pier, a local researcher reported seeing yet another great white off of Manresa State Beach on Friday afternoon.
Sean Van Sommeran made the report. He heads the Pelagic Shark Research Foundation in Santa Cruz.
According to Van Sommeran, the great white measured about 16 feet long. He believes the shark was the same female that his research group previously tagged. Van Sommeran said the two sightings were two different sharks, and it is not uncommon to see great whites in the area this time of year.
Ryan Dunlap of Capitola was fishing for bass on Wednesday when a 10-foot shark grabbed his bait and pulled him the length of the pier. He said the shark shredded his bait before letting go.
Dunlap had his digital camera on hand when the shark returned Thursday and was able to capture the great white on video.
Despite these recent great white sightings, parks officials say beaches remain open.
"I wouldn't keep my kids away from the beach. The lifeguards are there and they do what they can to keep everybody safe," Van Sommeran said.
Life guards, park rangers and the coast guard are advising people to use common sense.
If you see seagulls and sea lions hovering around the water, chances are you might also see a great white shark.
