SF Assault Suspect Arrested After Police Standoff

A 21-year-old man went to jail Monday morning after allegedly prompting a three-hour standoff by threatening to kill his girlfriend, her brother and her daughter in San Francisco, police said.

Eddy Santa Maria-Celis reportedly came home around midnight to 42 Santos St. and started arguing with his girlfriend, police Sgt. Wilfred Williams said.

Santa Maria-Celis allegedly began punching and assaulting her when her brother tried to intervene, Williams said.

During the struggle, Santa Maria-Celis reportedly threw a piggy bank at his girlfriend's 4-year-old daughter, who was in bed, hitting her in the face.

He picked up more than one butcher knife and threatened to kill the three, but they were able to leave the house and call police, Williams said.

Police arrived around 12:45 a.m. to find Santa Maria-Celis standing in the doorway with two knives, threatening to kill anyone who came inside, Williams said.

The SWAT team and a canine unit responded, and police negotiated with Santa Maria-Celis, who had locked himself inside, until about 4 a.m. when they entered the apartment.

He was arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, battery, making threats, delaying arrest, aggravated assault and child endangerment.

The three victims were transported to San Francisco General Hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
