A bright pink sign that curses Mormons has been taken down from a San Francisco property; the garage of which also served as a polling place last Tuesday.
Neighbors say the sign that reads "F--- Mormons" was up for several days following the election and during the passage of Proposition 8, a measure that was heavily supported by members of the church.
The sign was recently taken down. The photo was first brought to CBS 5's attention by local website
SFist.com.
CBS 5 walked the neighborhood in search of the home. There have been concerns the photo might have been photo-shopped, but it does not appear to be the case.
Neighbor Olivia De Santos, a web designer, blew the image up on her computer screen and said it appeared to be genuine.
CBS 5 eventually spotted the house from a vantage point on Sanchez Street near 17th in the San Francisco's Mission district. Looking southward at the top of a hill, a brown home in the 600 block of Sanchez Street that matches the photo from SFist.
The sign was found on the side of 606 Sanchez Street. The letters were about 3 feet high and posted on the side paneling. There are still pink tattered remnants of the sign on the side of the house.
Suzanne Turley, who lives in the same property, but in an adjacent condo, said her garage at 608 Sanchez was a polling place last Tuesday.
Turley said she didn't realize the sign was up.
Michael Thomas, the owner of 606 Sanchez confirmed to CBS 5 on Tuesday that he posted the "F--- Mormons" sign on the side of his condo out of anger with the Mormon Church.
Thomas and his spouse, Aric Olnes, were married in July. Here is part of the conversation between Thomas and CBS 5:
CBS 5: "How did you make the sign (it looks like neon in the photograph)?"
Michael Thomas: "It's made of pink sheets of paper taped together. The rain this weekend started soaking the paper. It was up from the day after election day until today, when we took it down. We were going out of town and I didn't want the paper to fly all over the place."
CBS 5: "Why did you post the sign?"
MT: "They're pretty much at the forefront. The Mormons are the culprits that foisted it on us; disenfranchising us. The Mormons legally did this."
CBS 5: "Do you blame all Mormons, or do you think the sign should be directed at the leadership of the church?"
MT: "It's not just their leadership. The hate is all over. It came from the top and they all dutifully followed. I don't feel that it's just church leaders. Some people in the Central Valley middle class people gave 50 grand a person."
CBS 5: "You've been following the discussion on SFist. While some comments support you, others are saying, 'this isn't going to help.'"
MT: "There are all kinds of assimilationists that are of the opinion that if we're only nicer, then maybe the Mormons and hate groups will come around. That ain't the way it works. Somebody needs to call these guys for what they are doing.
I'm angry at their meddling in our affairs. It's particularly ironic about the Mormons doing this, given their past. Polygamy and all that good stuff. Then, they sit there and lay down the gauntlet. Now that they're big and they feel entitled to persecute a group that's weaker."
