A bomb squad was sent Monday night to the scene of a home explosion in San Francisco's Sunnyside neighborhood that sent four people to the hospital and prompted some evacuations, authorities said.
Fire Lt. Ken Smith said the explosion occurred around 7:45 p.m. at 108 Congo Street. at the front of the two-story wood-frame home and ignited a small fire.
When firefighters arrived, they found the fire still burning and were able to quickly extinguish it, Smith said. The front of the house had been blown out.
Four people who were inside the home at the time of the explosion were transported to the hospital for treatment. Two of those victims suffered burns, although Smith did not know how serious the burns were.
One man was treated for neck and back pain and an elderly woman with a previous medical condition was transported as a precaution, Smith said.
A 2-year-old boy who was in the home next door at 106 Congo Street was treated at the scene for getting glass in his face and he was released, according to Smith.
The cause of the explosion was still under investigation.
A bomb squad was dispatched to the home and had put together a task force to investigate the cause, Smith said. But he added that the presence of the squad did not necessarily indicate that a bomb was involved.
As a precaution, police evacuated five nearby homes in the neighborhood for the night. The American Red Cross was called to the scene to assist those residents who were displaced.
