Two suspected gang members were to blame for firing a semi-automatic weapon into a funeral procession mourning an 18-year-old homicide victim, San Francisco police said Friday.
Shots were fired on a group of mourners about 1:25 p.m. Thursday outside the First Union Baptist Church at Golden Gate and Webster streets in the city's Western Addition. No one was struck, according to police.
SFPD Sgt. Wilfred Williams said police recovered a Tec-9 semi-automatic assault weapon from one of two men arrested in the funeral area. Investigators said the shooting was gang-related.
Deron Cheeves, 21, of Daly City, and Quinci Greene, 21, of San Francisco, were jailed on charges of attempted murder, assault with a firearm, conspiracy, possession of an assault weapon, firearm possession by a convicted felon, and participation in a criminal street gang, according to Williams.
A third man who was detained by officers was later released, Williams said.
The funeral where the gunfire occured was being held for Lazarus Pickett, a San Francisco man allegedly stabbed by his ex-girlfriend on Dec. 30.
DeEbony Smith, 27, is still in custody, charged with murder in that case.
