CBS 5 Reporter Kicked Out Of SF City Hall
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5) ―
Mayor Gavin Newsom spent his first day back from Hawaii holed up in his office Friday, avoiding journalists who spent hours waiting outside his office to talk to him, including this reporter.
He has not made any public remarks since he dropped out of the Governor's race October 30th.
As photographer Patrick Sedillo and I waited on the second floor, an event called "Where Hip Hop meets Couture" was beginning. Models from all over America were getting their costumes ready in the same hallway where we were working.
Eyes straight ahead, we continued our stakeout.
At 8 PM, as the mayor got ready to leave, San Francisco Sheriff Deputies began to kick reporters and photographers out of City Hall. I told Deputy Garrido we would leave after we talked to the mayor. The deputy stood firm.
We resisted; argued that our press pass allowed us to stay and eventually even arranged for the organizers of the event to give us a pass for their event. Still, we were denied access. The deputy raised his voice to ask, "are you refusing to leave?" Not wanting to get arrested, I finally backed down.
During that fracas, the mayor left out a back exit of City Hall.
