Oiled Birds Back In SF Bay After Spill Cleanup

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS 5 / AP) ― Officials are releasing birds that were cleaned of oil that coated them after a spill in San Francisco Bay last month.

In all, 49 oiled birds were collected in the days after the oil spilled from the Panamanian-flagged Dubai Star after a line ruptured Oct. 30 during a fuel transfer.

Beaches in Alameda were most affected by the spill, and the state closed a large swath of the bay to fishing while crews sopped up the sticky gunk.

Workers from the state Department of Fish and Game, the Coast Guard and the Oiled Wildlife Care Network released 10 of the birds earlier this month. On Friday, they plan to release 15 more at Eastshore State Park in Berkeley.

They say 14 of the birds died at the care facility and 20 were collected dead.
