22 Paroled Sex Offenders Nabbed In South Bay Sweep
SAN JOSE (CBS 5 / KCBS) ―
The legacy of the Garrido kidnapping case may be heightened awareness of police efforts to keep tabs on parolees.
A recent surprise sweep of convicted sex offenders in the South Bay uncovered at least nine that had not registered with their local police departments.
The two day operation by the Sexual Assault Felont Enfrocement task force was planned long before Jaycee Lee Dugard surfaced with her alleged captor and two children fathered by him.
This time however the operation garnered a lot more attention. Police hope that greater public awareness protects SAFE's budget from shrinking, said Contra Costa County Sheriff's Lt. Ed Wise.
Garrido registered, as required by Megan's Law, and was visited by authorities over the years, but they never noticed Dugard's encampment behind the property.
That underscores the need for more dollars and more vigilance, Wise said.
Contra Costa is one of several Bay Area jurisdictions that participates in the 12-county SAFE task force.
