An injured sea lion was taken to the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito Monday afternoon after being spotted on the shoulder of northbound Interstate Highway 880 in Oakland, a center employee said.
The animal was spotted on I-880 just north of 66th Avenue shortly after 9:10 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Kevin Kroncke said.
A crew from the Marine Mammal Center was dispatched to rescue the sea lion, which weighs between 125 and 150 pounds and is about 4 feet long. It had large gashes on its body, said Brodie, the center's stranding coordinator.
The crew picked up the sea lion shortly before noon and arrived at the Sausalito center shortly before 1 p.m., Brodie said.
