Scott Peterson has decided to move forward with an appeal of his murder conviction for the 2002 murder of his pregnant wife Laci. Now Scott's family is asking for the public's help picking up the tab for the latest appeal.
The convicted killer's family has created a website called
scottpetersonappeal.org, where they acknowledge that part of the cost of his new appeal hearing will be picked up by California taxpayers. The family also claims that an additional $95,000 is still needed to pay for the services of attorney Cliff Gardner.
On the website the Peterson family asks the public to donate anywhere from $5 to $50. Saying, "With your contribution to the Peterson Family fund, the investigation will be able to move forward uninterrupted, the burden to pay for it will be lifted from our parents, and we will be one step closer to the priceless freedom of our innocent brother."
San Quentin's death row inmates are forbidden from accessing the internet, but that isn't stopping Peterson from getting his voice out on the web. A prison spokesman said Death Row inmates like Peterson often write to a family, or subscribe to dating services found on the backs of magazines. Once they have established a pen pal, the inmates letters are posted onto blogs. Last month Peterson wrote about the need for an appeal.
"We have a lot to do, and the passage of time threatens to rob us of opportunities," Peterson said. "The reason we have a lot to do is because the prosecution did not pursue the other theories and leads that could have revealed what happened to my wife and son."
Peterson was convicted in November of 2004 for killing Laci, who was seven and a half months pregnant with their son Conner.
