Poll: Little Support For Schwarzenegger Recall

SACRAMENTO (AP) ― A new poll shows Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's popularity dropping, but most voters don't support recalling him.

The Field Poll released Tuesday finds that 69 percent of California voters oppose recalling the governor, who was elected to office during the 2003 recall of then-Gov. Gray Davis.

Twenty-nine percent support the recall effort by the state prison guards' union if it qualifies for a special election ballot.

That's good news for a governor who has seen his approval ratings drop amid a record-long budget stalemate. The poll found that just 38 percent of respondents approved of Schwarzenegger's job performance.

The California Correctional Peace Officers Association last week filed a formal notice with the secretary of state seeking to start a recall drive against Schwarzenegger.

Julie Soderlund, a spokeswoman for the governor, says the survey results show voters aren't buying the recall attempt of a special interest group.

The telephone interview of 1,008 registered voters was conducted Sept. 5-14. It has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3.2 percentage points.
