Schwarzenegger Sets Date For Special Election

SACRAMENTO (BCN) ― Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger declared that Nov. 3 will be the date of a special election to replace Congresswoman Ellen Tauscher, D-Alamo, who was confirmed by the Senate last week to serve in a post at the U.S. State Department.

Schwarzenegger had 14 days after Tauscher's confirmation to set a date for the special election, which will fill the seat of the representative of California's 10th Congressional District for the rest of a two-year term that will end in 2011.

The election must be held between 112 and 126 days after the governor's proclamation, according to Contra Costa County Assistant County Registrar Candy Lopez.

Tauscher was confirmed Thursday as undersecretary for Arms Control and International Security after being nominated for the position by President Obama in March.

She will now advise the president and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on global security, weapons proliferation and arms control.

The 10th Congressional District, which includes parts of Contra Costa, Alameda, Solano and Sacramento counties, had been represented by Tauscher since 1997.
