SC Beach Boardwalk Ride Stays Closed After Mishap

SANTA CRUZ (CBS 5 / AP / BCN) ― A popular amusement ride at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk remained closed Tuesday following an accident that injured two people on Monday.

Boardwalks managers said a young boy and a woman were slightly hurt when a door broke off the Cyclone ride and struck them.

Witnesses said the door, which leads to the entrance of the ride, somehow came loose and hit one of the ride's stalls. It hit the boy in the leg, while a woman who was running for cover was also bruised by wayward debris.

"(The door) somehow impacted one of the stalls that the riders stand in. The wall of the stall is what caused the injury to the child," said Kris Reyes, a Boardwalk spokesperson. "The wall sort of buckled."

Both the boy and the woman suffered minor bumps and scratches, officials said. Paramedics treated the 9-year-old boy at the scene and then released him to his parents.

The Cyclone, in which riders stand against the wall of a giant spinning cylinder and are held in place by centrifugal force, will remain shut down for the foreseeable future until an investigation is completed by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

Once officials determine what went wrong, they will decide the future of the ride.
