Firefighters battled a two-alarm structure fire that broke out Tuesday afternoon in San Rafael, fire officials said.
Fire crews from San Rafael, Kentfield, Ross Valley and Novato responded to the fire, which was reported shortly before 4 p.m.
Steve Huey, general manager at the Foam Store of Marin at 813 A Street, across the street from where the fire burned, said he heard a small explosion around the time the fire started.
He said it appeared a police officer was nearby when the explosion happened and heard it too.
"When I went outside to call 911 he was right at the corner already with his lights on," Huey said.
He described the building as a single-family home and said an exterior wall had partially collapsed onto a Honda Civic parked in the driveway.
"The house is pretty well torched," he said.
Huey said around 4:30 p.m. that the house was still smoldering but that flames were no longer visible.
Huey said he did not see anyone being treated for injuries.
