Brush Fire Closes Lane Of 101 In San Rafael

SAN RAFAEL (BCN) ― The No. 4 lane of southbound U.S. Highway 101 in San Rafael was closed Tuesday morning as firefighters checked for hotspots after controlling a roadside grassfire, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A vehicle apparently threw sparks onto roadside vegetation and ignited a fire around 5:15 a.m., CHP Officer Kevin Kroncke said.

The southbound No. 4 lane of the highway was closed between the Manuel T. Freitas Parkway and North San Pedro Road, Kroncke said. The Freitas Parkway onramp to southbound 101 was also closed.

A Sig-alert was issued around 5:30 a.m., and the lane remained closed while firefighters checked for hotspots and conducted cleanup, Kroncke said.

Drivers in the area were being slowed at Lucas Valley Road to allow for the smoky conditions, Kroncke said.
