San Leandro Welcomes Portugal Dignitaries
SAN LEANDRO (BCN) ―
San Leandro officials will be welcoming dignitaries from Ponta Delgada, Azores Islands, Portugal, on Monday as part of a larger regional visit and to commemorate their long-standing Sister City affiliation with San Leandro.
The delegation includes Ponta Delgada Mayor Berta Cabral and several key staff members.
San Leandro Mayor Tony Santos, along with former Mayor Sheila Young, will welcome the delegation and meet with them informally Monday afternoon.
The delegation will tour San Leandro's key city facilities as well as a selection of businesses.
A banquet is planned for Tuesday evening, when the visitors will meet with members of the City Council, business leaders and city staff.
"I look forward to meeting with our Sister City officials and sharing San Leandro's hospitality," Santos said in a prepared statement. "Our two cities enjoy a rich historical relationship that developed with the arrival of some of San Leandro's very first settlers from Portugal more than 100 years ago. The Portuguese today are a strong and vibrant part of our community and we want to foster our relationship with Ponta Delgada that recognizes San Leandro's important historical roots."
Officials from Ponta Delgada last visited San Leandro in 2001 to commemorate the 30-year Sister City affiliation between the two cities.
