Man Shot, Apparently Killed In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS 5) ― A man was shot and apparently killed Monday in the parking lot of San Leandro's Washington Plaza, witnesses and authorities said.

Officers responding to a shooting call at 1287 Washington Avenue found the victim about 11:30 a.m.; the man was rushed to a local trauma center, where he reportedly died a short a short time later.

Witnesses described the incident as a possible carjacking gone bad.

They said a driver sitting in a white Land Rover SUV was approached by the gunman; the driver got out of his vehicle and into an altercation with the suspect. The fight ended with the suspect shooting the driver, witnesses said.

Police indicated that the suspect fled on foot and was last seen in the 200 block of Marina Blvd.  Officers set up a preimeter and spent the afternoon canvassing with police dogs looking for the shooter, but had not located him.

The gunman was described by authorities as a dark-skinned black man in his early 20s, 6' and 180 lbs.  Polcie said the man had a quarter-inch afro and was wearing a long white sleeved pullover shirt and dark jeans.

"Detectives are still investigating the nature and the motive for the shooting," said Lt. Pete Ballew.

Ballew asked that anyone with information about the shooting contact San Leandro police.
